Alliances, Occupation, and Broken Promises

1931
In September of that 1931, Japanese soldiers blew up a section of railroad and blames the attack on the Chinese. This gave the Japanese a reason to occupy and take control of the city of Shenyang. By the end of 1931 the Japanese army had taken control of the entire province of Manchuria.

1933
In 1933 Adolf Hitler became the Chancellor of Germany following the success of his Nazi party in elections. Shortly after, Germany quit the League of Nations, as Japan has done shortly before over the Manchurian issue.

1934
Hitler declared himself Fuhrer.

1935
Hitler re-introduced conscription.

1936
Germany re-occupied the Rhineland, an act that was forbidden under the Treaty of Versailles. Britain and France merely protested this act. Germany and Japan signed the Anti-Comintern Pact, which aimed to “protect the common interests of both Japan and Germany against the armed pressure exerted by the Soviet Union.” The pact allowed Japan to expand without resistance in China because any action by the Soviet Union would trigger retaliation from both Japan and Germany.

1937
Japan extended her control in China and in Europe Germany formally renounced the Treaty of Versailles. A year later,

1938
Germany annexed Austria. Hitler claimed that all lands with a majority of Germany speaking people should be handed back. To avoid a war, British PM Chamberlain helped to negotiate a deal that saw Czechoslovakia sede Sundetenland to Germany.
